Mastering Exposure by Mark Chen

This is a great book to start with for the beginning photographer. He talks in depth about each camera setting, how they work and how to use them, and how they relate to each other. Then there is an entire chapter devoted to all of the qualities of light including adding in flash. The final chapter covers processing images. There are also several exercises throughout the book to get you thinking. A solid book for those new to photography.
